This qualification defines the skills and knowledge required for a higher engineering tradesperson within metal, engineering, manufacturing and associated industries.
The skills associated with this qualification are intended to apply to a wide range of engineering work undertaken in the fields of refrigeration and air conditioning, casting and moulding, computer numerically controlled (CNC) programming, fluid power, heavy fabrication, instrumentation, maintenance, plant mechanics, marine electronics, mechatronics, patternmaking, robotics, toolmaking, welding and watch and clock services and repair, including post-trade work.
It provides the skills and knowledge for a person to understand and implement quality control techniques, exercise good interpersonal and communications skills, work from complex instructions and procedures, exercise discretion within the scope of responsibility, perform work under limited supervision either individually or in a team environment, be responsible for assuring the quality of their own work, provide trade guidance and assistance as part of a work team, perform non-trade tasks which are incidental or peripheral to the primary tasks and facilitate the completion of the whole task, inspect products and/or materials for conformity with established operational standards, operate lifting equipment incidental to their work and assists in the provision of training in conjunction with supervisors and trainers.
This qualification may be accessed by direct entry. While there is no qualification entry requirement, it is assumed that the learner is either already a tradesperson with access to structured on and off-the-job training or is an apprentice under an Australian Apprenticeship arrangement. It should not be used as a pre-employment or pre-apprenticeship program. It is specifically designed to cover the skills and knowledge required of workers employed as Engineering/Manufacturing Tradesperson – Special Class Level II as defined in the Manufacturing and Associated Industries and Occupations Award.

Mechanical Engineering Supervisor
Mechanical Engineering Supervisors oversee and coordinate the activities of Mechanical Engineering Tradespeople.
Mechanical Engineering Draftsperson
Mechanical Engineering Draftspeople assist in mechanical engineering research, design, manufacture, construction, operation and maintenance of machines, manufacturing equipment, mechanical installations and facilities. They prepare detailed drawings and plans of mechanical engineering work.
CAM Programmer
CAM Programmers set up computers in the manufacturing process which make moulds and generate 3D models. They apply machine program language to generate machining sequences.
Advanced Mechanical Maintenance Technician
Advanced Mechanical Maintenance Technicians apply advanced engineering skills and techniques to maintain, repair and modify mechanical plant and equipment.
Electrician
Electricians maintain, modify and repair electrical equipment, components, circuits and machines in a variety of industrial, commercial and domestic contexts. They may make replacement parts, connect wires or cables, and operate machine tools.
Mechanical Engineering Technician
Mechanical Engineering Technicians interpret technical data, undertake technical calculations relevant to mechanical equipment and structures, assist in the design of equipment and machinery, prepare operating procedures and act as a resource to tradespeople and operators.
Fluid Power Systems Technician
Fluid Power Systems Technicians apply engineering skills and techniques to install, maintain, repair and modify pneumatic, hydraulic and fluid power components and systems. This may include pumps, actuators, pipe work, accumulators, dampers and controls and control systems.
Pressure Welder
Pressure Welders assemble, weld and repair pressure vessels such as storage tanks, pipelines and gas cylinders to exacting specifications.
Advanced Toolmaking Technician
Advanced Toolmaking Technicians manufacture and maintain machine tools and engineering measuring equipment, to precision tolerances.
Advanced Fabrication Technician (Structural)
Advanced Fabrication Technicians (Structural) apply advanced development, fabrication and welding skills to repair, produce and assemble fabricated components and plant. Fabrications are repaired or produced from engineering drawings or transposed from existing fabrication shapes.
