Course Overview

This qualification reflects the role of educators in early childhood education and care who work in regulated children’s education and care services in Australia. Educators at this level are responsible for designing and implementing curriculum that meets the requirements of an approved learning framework and for maintaining compliance in other areas of service operations. They use specialised knowledge and analyse and apply theoretical concepts to diverse work situations. They may have responsibility for supervision of volunteers or other educators.

Early childhood educators work in long day care centres, family day care, pre-schools or kindergartens.

To achieve this qualification, the individual must have completed a total of at least 280 hours of work in a regulated children’s education and care service in Australia as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency. The total number of hours may be applied collectively across all units of competency that include the requirement for workplace hours.

Pre-requisites

Entry to this qualification is open to individuals who hold:

• CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, OR
• CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.

Alternatively, individuals may hold:

• An Australian diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care, OR
• An Australian diploma or Certificate III in Children’s Services, AND
• Demonstrate at least 12 months of cumulative employment (full-time equivalent) within the last 5 years in a regulated education and care service in Australia, supported by verifiable evidence, OR
• Hold the CHCSS00147 Entry into Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care.

Training Arrangements

Class Delivery and Learning Expectations

Class sessions are scheduled once a week to ensure you receive a balanced combination of practical and theoretical learning. These sessions are structured to cater to a wide variety of learning styles and to support your development of the skills and knowledge required for the course.

Workplace practices and environments will be regularly simulated and used to conduct skills-based assessments in accordance with the relevant unit requirements.

In addition to classroom learning, students should expect to undertake the following independent study commitments each week:

• Up to 7 hours of self-study, which may include revision, research, and engagement with learning materials.
• Up to 7 hours of assignment preparation, including completing assessment tasks, reviewing feedback, and preparing evidence for competency.

Homework tasks may include research activities, readings from prescribed textbooks, and ongoing work on assessments. All required learning resources are provided to students at the commencement of each unit.

Assessment Arrangements

Assessment for this course is conducted individually for each unit of competency. All assessment tasks are provided through the Learning Management System (LMS), where students can view:

Students are required to complete assessment tasks outside of scheduled class sessions as part of their regular study and preparation. Your trainer/assessor will explain the assessment requirements for each unit at the commencement of delivery.

Placement Arrangements

This course requires students to complete a minimum of 280 hours of work placement. Students must be available for a minimum of two (2) days per week, outside their scheduled class days, to undertake placement. Placements are arranged once the student has gained sufficient theoretical knowledge, typically towards the end of the course.

Angel Institute guarantees support in securing a suitable work placement. We have established formal Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with multiple host organisations to assist students in completing their required hours.

While we will do our best to arrange a placement within 30 km of the student’s residential address, this may not always be possible due to availability, service capacity, and demand in certain areas.

If a student identifies their own potential placement site, it must be approved by Angel Institute before the placement can commence, to ensure it meets all required training and assessment standards.

All placement activities will be completed under the supervision of the host organisation’s supervisor, and students must complete all work placement assessment tasks for each unit that includes a practical component.

IT Specifications

Students must have access to a laptop or desktop computer with at least 8GB RAM (16GB recommended), an Intel i5/Ryzen 5 processor or newer, and Windows 10+ or macOS 11+. A stable internet connection with a minimum 10 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload speed is required for online learning and assessment submission. Students should have Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or equivalent, a PDF reader, and a modern web browser such as Chrome, Edge, or Safari. A webcam, microphone, headphones, and a suitable quiet study space are also necessary for online classes and assessment activities.

• Prospective students must be at least 18 years of age.
• Angel Institute will conduct a Pre-Training Review/UAN (Upfront Assessment of Need) to determine whether the course is suitable and appropriate for the student’s individual needs.
• Students must complete the Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) assessment administered by Angel Institute to its satisfaction.
• Hold CHC30121 or CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, OR an Australian diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care / diploma or Certificate III in Children’s Services with at least 12 months FTE employment in the last 5 years in a regulated education and care service (verifiable evidence), OR hold CHCSS00147 Entry into Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care.
